Thanjavur formerly TANJORE,is a city in the Indian state of tamilnadu .Thanjavur is an important center of south Indian religion,art and architecture .Most of great living chola temples,which are UNESCO WORLD
HERITAGE MONUMENTS, are located in and around thanjavur . The foremost among these, the BRIHADEESWARA TEMPLE, is located in the center of the day thanjavur is also home to tanjore painting, a painting style unique to the region.
BRIHADEESWARA TEMPLE:
The BRIHADEESWARA temple is built by RAJA RAJA CHOLA 1003 in 1010AD. This temple is ancient temple is LOD SHIVA – in his dancing pose who called the nataraj. This temple in also known as Rajeswara Temple , Raja Rajeswaram and periya kovil. This thousand year old temple is now part of the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE .
The temple is mangnificent constrct that will never stop suipeiting the visiter, built using over 130,000 tones of granite . This fabulous structrue shows the achitectural powers and affinity of south Indian king.
The major attcection of the temple in the 216 feet tall to wer is built above the sanctum of the temple. A spectrum of hindu temple styles continued develop form the 5th to the 9th century over the chalukya era rule as evidenced other monuments .This south Indian style is most fully realized both in scale and details in the Brihadeeswara temple built there after , between 850and1280 the chola king Rajaraja .
Nandi are from the 16th and 17th century Nayaka .Another breath taking things that is the magnificent nandhi statue built at the temple it is about 2meters in height,six meter in length and two and half meter in width and weight around 20 tons for a statue built from a single stone.
Barathanatiyam are carved carefully on the exterior wall of the upper storey of the temple.
SCRIPTURE
In this temple along with sculpture there is many scripture. In the wall of the temple there are many ancient information are parched in that.
It contain all the information about the cholas empire . This helpus to know about their greatness and proudness of the king and their kingdom.The detail of the king’s generation and the people’s life style their culture and religious aspects .
